Imagine sharpening your tools on a smooth spherical, compound-curved, surface. This is precisely the surface produced on your grinding wheels when using our:
Tru N Dress Grand Slam and Crowning tool rest. Few people have experienced this, but I encourage you to try it. It is truly a unique experience.
To get an understanding of the resulting surface, I refer you to the drawing to the left. It is as if you took a 1" wide slice out of an 8" sphere.
What are the benefits?
1) Significant heat can be generated when grinding metals on aggregate based (stone) wheels. Heat can have an adverse effect, especially on tools. Some tool steels should not be quenched in water. When tools contact the flat surface of grinding wheel, a great amount of friction is created producing heat. When a tool contacts a spherical surface the contact is minute and narrowly focused, thus minimizing the friction and producing less heat.
2) Many tools such as plane irons, chisels, woodturning Skews etc. have straight edges. When refreshing the bevels on straight edges on a grinding wheel with a flat surface, if the position of the tool wavers even the slightest bit, the edge of the wheel will cut a groove in the edge of the tool. This requires reestablishing the edge, wasting valuable time and tool steel. The surface produced by the Grand Slam and Crowning tool rest results in about 1/64" high crown on the wheel, which allows for some variation in the position of tools, reducing the risk of damaging the tool, such as described above.
